Why is The Mousetrap the world’s longest-running play?

The Mousetrap debuted in 1952 on London’s West End and has run continuously until today! Check out the site for this production: https://uk.the-mousetrap.co.uk/

Who is Agatha Christie?

Agatha Christie is a well-known English mystery writer for novels and plays. She lived from 1890-1976. She began writing when she was working as a nurse during WWI.

What else did Agatha Christie write?

She is most well-known for The Mousetrap as well as Murder on the Orient Express. Check out this guide for the complete list of her work: https://www.tlbranson.com/agatha-christie-books-in-order/

What is The Mousetrap about?

This play is a murder mystery that takes place in Monkswell Manor, a guest house run by Mollie and Giles Ralston. Their opening night leaves them snowed in with their guests, a strange mix of characters. News of a nearby murder brings Sergeant Trotter to investigate, and secrets begin to be revealed.

Who are the suspects?

Mollie Ralston- Young wife of Giles Ralston. Inherited Monkswell Manor from her Aunt and decided to open a guest house.

Giles Ralston-Mollie’s husband and co-host of Monkswell Manor

Christopher Wren- Guest at Monkswell Manor. Flighty, childish, and unusual young man.

Mrs. Boyle- Guest at Monkswell Manor. Stern and displeased with everything.

Major Metcalf- Guest at Monkswell Manor. Retired military officer.

Miss Casewell- Guest at Monkswell Manor. Masculine young woman who acts a bit stand-offish.

Mr. Paravicini- Unexpected guest at Monkswell Manor. Car overturned in a snowdrift. Foreign and eccentric.

Sergeant Trotter- Detective. Arrives to investigate connections between Monkswell Manor and a murder at another location.

Whodunnit?

This is the question audience members are challenged to figure out! Anyone who sees a production is sworn to secrecy and cannot reveal who the murderer is. The West End production asks them “’to preserve the tradition of The Mousetrap by keeping the secret locked in their hearts”.
